An Ex-Ordinary Life..

Thanks for dropping by! It's about time that i updated this welcome message, long overdue since I've left Manila for about 2 years now. But this site continues to be alive and well, the successor of my old tomatot2.blogspot.com :) My life was pretty normal and ordinary, till i met Christ in 2000 and it has been quite an adventure since! lots of ups and downs, risk-taking, breath-taking moments even, sometimes quiet, sometimes painful and sad, but never a dull moment and never empty and always filled with hope :) if u thought indiana jones led an exciting life, wait till you live a life with Jesus! :)) Ready for your adventure of a life time?

Stop Succeeding and Be a Blessing

Stumbled upon this really brief blog, Stop Succeeding and Be a Blessing, by Ps Steve Furtick that put across a point that's been on my heart, so concisely.

This thought has been on my heart, especially for the campuses of SIngapore, or even SG as a whole, where most of everything centres around being and becoming the best future employee or richest entrepreneur upon graduation such that even CCAs (co-curricular activities) have become more CV boosters rather than life enrichment activities. Doing well in life is good! but do so with the right reasons and do so remembering the brevity of life. We are afterall, blessed to be a blessing.

As the lyrics of Hosanna by Hillsongs goes, i look forward to seeing a generation rise up to take their place in selfless faith as we all see the things God sees, and care for what He truly cares about.

"...I see a generation
Rising up to take the place
With selfless faith, with selfless faith
I see a new revival
Starting as we...

Just came back from watching Prince Caspian and there were some key dialogues and scenes that really stuck out to me:

Why Would That Stop You?

The scene where Lucy was telling Aslan how her siblings did not believe her when she told them that she'd seen Him (though she ultimately did not follow Him but her siblings which ultimately led to a series of unfortunate events). slight alterations (coz this is from memory)

Lucy: I knew i saw you! but they didn't believe me...

Aslan: Why would that stop you from coming to me?

Lucy:... i guess i was afraid to come alone..

Isa 42:16 - there are certain paths that God places in our lives .. those roads least travelled.
A Run To Remember

Last night's Campus Harvest ended with a challenge from Ps Steve Murrell on what it means to live life to full.

Ecclesiastes 4:8, speaks of a man all alone, with neither son nor brother, and to which all his toil, lead to a meaningless existence. A meaningful existence entails

1) Having "sons", or people that are following after you, people to whom you are imparting to.

2) Having "brothers", or people that are walking with you, as you live out the destiny and plans of God in your life. People that'd fan the flame of God in you in times that it would dwindle, in times when the hottest object, can grow lukewarm due to the winds and storms of life.

It is then, to reach the next generation, with others alongside you.

Summarized in 2 words, a full life is this: meaningful relationships

Relationships with people are the only things that we carry on to eternity (that is if they are people also in Christ), when all else will be left behind: our careers, investment account, money, ...

Broadway Beng 3 Musical

Hilarious, hilarious, hilarious! for those who have a good grasp of Singlish and Hokkien that is. If you belong to one of the very "jiak kan tang" group and have not been through the Hokkien-isation of NS days, i would not recommend this locally produced musical to you unless you are one that just enjoys laughing with the crowd.

Broadway Beng, played by Sebastian Tan was quite a charmer, from the aunties, uncles, ah gong, ah mas to the young working professionals born in the late 70s, early 80s. Clearly updated with current affairs, BB was a very impressive piece of work, blending western influences with a Singaporean twists in songs.

As the locals would say, this is a "chio ka peng" (laugh until you fall) production. But i must warn that like any Ah Beng, there is quite a fair use of expletives - not excessive in a way that they punctuate every sentence, but definitely something you want your children to hear.In fact, interestingly, at one juncture, the audience even protested ...

Rights of A Princess - by Elizabeth Cabiling

I came across this blog when i was at Ps Ferdie's blog. This was written by his 15 year old daughter, Elizabeth and it is absolutely encouraging to know that there are teenagers that know their rights as children of God. I invite all of you to read it, no matter how old you are.

Some rights, just cannot be overemphasized enough.

To the beautiful ladies out there, remember your status as a princess comes not because you marry a prince, but because you are first of all the daughter of the King of Kings

I especially dedicate this to some of the most princess-y girls i know, kimmy, gwen, KP and kris! hehe

Rights of a Princess (WARNING: EXTREMELY GIRLY)

Solve This Mystery If You Can

The weather in Singapore had been particularly hot the last week or so. Hence utilities usage had been high as well as we would turn on our a/c just to cool down.

Because of the intermittent hot and cold temperatures i.e. from the weather outside , to aircondtioned buildings and such, I started to feel unwell and began developing a throbbing headache. As such, i stayed in at home to do my revisions instead of going out as i normally would.

As i sat down in the living room going through my notes with no one in the house around the bright sunny noon time, the musical wind-up snowman in my living room started to play for a brief moment - say abt 2-3 seconds.

While i was initially creeped out by the sound of the music with no one in the house, i realised that it was quite easily explained by science...

Try to explain this mystery if you can

Now, my family has devised a unique way of positioning the key in such a way that we would be able to gain access to it from outside, and hence I do not actually own a set of the keys to my padlock, esp since I left for manila and abdicated my ownership over that set of keys.

Now that the key has been removed, it means that i have NO means of getting OUT of the house. By this time, it was already 40mins to my exams. It will take me a good 15-20min for me to reach my school not including the wai...

Would this happen in Singapore?

I wonder how many hours of homework our kids spend on homework in SG, esp those in the supposed "elite" schools?

Thanks Ann, for the reference!

====================================================================

Cuts in homework proposed
April 1, 2008

Kristin Rushowy
TORONTO STAR
LINK: http://parentcentral.ca/parent/article/407827

Students should not be assigned homework on holidays such as March Break or Christmas or other “days of significance,” says a groundbreaking policy before Toronto’s public school board.

The draft document – the result of weeks of consultations with thousands of parents, teachers, principals and community members – also says students in kindergarten should have no homework other than reading with or talking to their parents.
Death, Hope, Love

Someone asked recently, "if there was a God, why does he allow natural disasters and cause many people to die?"

1) Physical death is not bad/ evil

Fundamentally, the question assumes, that to die physically, is bad, perhaps evil even. But contrary to that , in the life of those who follow God, Death of the flesh is not bad nor evil, but it is something that is to be embraced and if i dare say, something to look forward to even! Isaiah 57:1-2 says

"The righteous perish,
       and no one ponders it in his heart;
       devout men are taken away,
       and no one understands
that the righteous are taken away
       to be spared from evil.
Those who walk uprightly
       enter into peace;
they find rest as they lie in death."

In death,...

You would squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a coloured mug and you were given PINK tablets to see if you had plague.

You know what SBC stands for.

You paid 40 cents for cartons of Chocolate or Strawberry milk every week in class.

Everyone's wallet used to be the velcro type

It was cool to have pagers in secondary/pri school though they were banned.

SBS buses used to be non-airconditioned. The bus seats are made of wood and the cushionwere red. The big red bell gave a loud BEEP! when pressed.

There were still bus tickets and bus conductors would come up to check them.

Envelopes were given to us to donate to Sharity Elephant every Children's Day.

You've probably read Young Generation magazine. You know who's Vinny ...
